CES, CHS Receive Statewide Honors for Behavior Programs

CES and CHS PBS teams accept their awards.

The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education through the Special Education Division of Effective Practices recognized schools for successfully adopting and implementing Schoolwide Positive Behavior Supports (PBS). PBS is a comprehensive approach for improving student behavior and academic performance.

Awards were presented at the annual statewide PBS summer training session at the Lake of the Ozarks. “The schools receiving recognition are making a real difference for all children, especially those who deal with behavior challenges every day,” said Deputy Commissioner Margie Vandeven. “It not only takes time to implement these types of supportive environments, it takes true change within the school.”

Schools are awarded various levels of recognition based on their present level of implementation. Schools that have implemented for three years are eligible the Bronze level. At four years, schools can apply for Silver Level and at five years, schools may apply for Gold Level recognition. The application process requires school PBS team members to receive prescribed training, submit to a schoolwide evaluation and document review.

Concordia High School earned Bronze Level recognition in their first year of application. Concordia Elementary School earned the Silver Level of recognition. CES earned the Bronze level last year.

Currently, more than 600 schools in 176 district across the state actively particpate in Missouri Schoolwide Positive Behavior Supports. To learn more, browse to http://pbismissouri.org/.
